Kari was born in Maaren Kirkeboe, Vik i Sogn, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway.

She emigrated to America as a young woman. Her sisters and parents also immigrated from the Sogn Fjord of Norway, to SE Minnesota - Rochester area.

Kari married Kristen Steffenson Nese April 12, 1884 in Deuel County, SD. They went by Carrie and Christian Stevenson most of their married life.

Kari's mother-in-law, Brita Bendiksdatter Fjerestad, was my g.g. grandfather, Johannes Bendikson Fjerstad's youngest sibling. When Brita was widowed (Kristen's birth father died), she remarried a few years later to my g.g.grandfather on another line, Peder K. Fjerestad. My grandfather, Olai B. Fjerstad used to sing the song "I'm My Own Grandpa" and then laugh. I still can hear his beautiful solo voice, singing so many songs. Also his magical humor and easy-going disposition.

Kari and Kristen moved to Riverside, California, where they raised their daughter, Clara Bertina Stevenson. They had two other children who died at birth, and Clara was the only child to survive.
