The son of James Harvey Baker and Lenorah Ann Beers, James Baker married Mabel Roena Cunningham (1882-1922) in 1901 in Edmore, Montcalm County, Michigan. This marriage ended in divorce in 1920. In 1932, he married Elizabeth Marjorie Hamilton (1918-2004). Suffering from asthma, he and his wife moved to Arizona in early 1944, about four months before his death. He was a carpenter by trade.
