Howard Wallace Benway grew up in Tallula, Illinois. His father was a blacksmith. Howard married Bessie May Charlton from the nearby town of Greenview, Illinois on March 11, 1908. Two children were born to them in Illinois: Arla Marie and Donald Charlton.
In 1914, Henry Ford offered the salary of $5. per day to workers at Ford Motor Company in Highland Park, Michigan. Howard, like many others, moved to Michigan to work at Ford Motor. Howard and Bessie bought a home on Grand Avenue in Detroit. In the late 1930's the couple travelled by train to San Francisco, California to visit Howard's sister Carrie and her husband, George Ratliff. Howard died of heart disease at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit at the age of 58.
