C.W. "Bill" Barksdale 1926 - 2009 C.W. (Bill) Barksdale was born July 21, 1926 in Weedpatch, California. He went to be with the Lord Saturday, February 7, 2009. Born to the parents of Cleo and Hazel Barksdale. He grew up in Bakersfield, California. He went to Beardsley Elementary School where he was known as the "Beardsley Flash" and then attended and graduated from Kern Union High School in 1944, where he was a star football player. In 1945 he served his country in the United States Navy, and later that year he was given an honorable medical discharge. In June he married the love of his life, Ruby (Heimiller) Barksdale. The next year they welcomed their first child into the world, Nancy (Barksdale) LeGrand. Three years after that, they welcome their second child into the world, William Barksdale. C.W. served as the minister for the McFarland Church of Christ for 14 years and also served as an elder to the Westside Church of Christ for 36 years. C.W. was quite the entrepreneur. In 1963 he started Bill Barksdale Fertilizer and was the owner/operator until his retirement in 1998. During those years he also owned and helped run several other business including DeWeese Spreaders, Fannin Superior Gypsum and Service Oil Company. C.W. was an avid Dodger fan, he was a season ticket holder and attended many games with his lovely wife, where they enjoyed the famous Dodger Dogs. He and Ruby loved to travel in their motor home. They traveled the lower 48 in their motorhome and also vacationed in Hawaii and Alaska. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Ophelia Barksdale; his parents, Cleo and Hazel Barksdale; his step-father "grandpa" Dave Thompson; his sister, Phyllis Bolles; and brother, Eddie Barksdale. He is survived by his wife Ruby of 63 years; daughter, Nancy LeGrand and her husband Rod; son, William Barksdale and wife, Nora; granddaughter, Jody Curtsinger and her husband, Shawn; granddaughter, Dawn Ambrose and her husband, Ray; grandson, Ryan LeGrand; granddaughter, Kasey Owens and husband Tom; grandson, Matthew LeGrand; and grandson, Chadd Barksdale and wife, Alia. He had five great-grandchildren, Ryanne Dover-Owens, Kaylan Curtsinger, Joseph Ambrose, Trey Owens, Marlowe Ambrose and soon to be a sixth great grandchild, name to be announced. He was also survived by his loyal and long time friends, Lindel and Drew Lynn Smith. C.W. was a beloved husband, father, grandfather (Papa), great-grandfather and friend. The Barksdale family would like to thank God for his love and care. A viewing will be open to the public Wednesday, February 11th, from 4 - 8 p.m., at Greenlawn Southwest (Panama Lane). A Memorial service will be held Thursday, February 12th, 11:00 a.m., at the Westside Church of Christ 7300 Stockdale Hwy.
