John Edward Ashberry, Sr. 88, passed away at his home on December 6, 2014. He was born on August 30, 1926 in Foster, Virginia. He served in the U.S. Army. He retired in 1981, after 35 years of service from Yorktown Naval Weapons Station. He was a member of the American Legion and a life member at the Gloucester Moose Lodge. He loved baseball, was an avid fisherman and had a passion for helping others. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Helen and his wife of 13 years, Gazelle; a sister, Estelle; a son-in-law, Randy, and a granddaughter, Melanie. He is survived by his three children, Jay (Kay) of Foster, Eileen of Bedford, and Doug (Linda) of Mathews; granddaughters, Nancy, Kim, Amy, and Megan; great-grandson, Blaine, "adoptive grandson", Matt. The family would like to extend their greatest thanks to his caregivers, Kay Ashberry, Beverly Gayle and Debbie Wiggins for their love and care. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 from 7 – 8:30 p.m. at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, Virginia. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 10th. at 11:00 a.m. at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 723, Mathews, VA 23109 or to Macedonia Baptist Church, c/o Pastor Jay Butcher, P.O. Box 102, Foster, VA 23056.
