Seventh of 10 children born to George W. and Elizabeth Bernard Durrett, and the second born after they arrived in Texas and settled on Ten Mile Creek, near Lancaster, Dallas County, Texas.

Married Albina Louisa Cheshier Durrett on 24 February 1878 in Dallas County, Texas.

Helped organize Chestnut Avenue Christian Church in Fort Worth, Texas, which is now called North Side Christian Church.

Walter had TB toward the end of his life. He lived outside in a tent. A few days before his death, the tent blew down, so he was moved into the house. His bed was placed by a window so that he could see the first airplane pass over Fort Worth. It was on a flight from the east coast to California.
