He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Macy Adkins; brothers, James William (Shorty), and Dallas (Beanie) Adkins; also father and mother-in-law, Gordon and Annie Reynolds. Dad was a hardworking man that loved his family. He never met a stranger and spent a lot of time on ball fields and bowling alleys supporting his children's sports. He worked 42 years with the Virginia Department of Transportation in addition to farming tobacco. Following retirement, he worked with several contractors driving a bulldozer. Dad not only served his family, but was a member of Glade Hill Baptist Church serving the Lord in many positions. He was a deacon and associate Sunday School secretary actively serving until his decline in health.
Survivors are his loving and faithful wife of almost 57 years, Jeanette; his sons, Mark, David (Linda), Matthew Adkins; and his daughter, Mary Kay (Brad) Hunziker. He also had five special grandchildren that were his pride and joy, Olivia, Emerson, Greyson, Reece, and Faith. Also surviving are sisters, Peggy Jamison, Margie (Bob) Shytle; sister-in-law, Shelby Adkins; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, C.B. (Judy) Reynolds, Pat (Johnie) Greer, Brenda (Ronnie) Tyree, Nancy Reynolds, and Phyllis (Gwynn) Tyler, as well as several nephews, nieces, cousins, and special friends.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Glade Hill Baptist Church by the Reverend David Long and Dr. Adam Tyler. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the Church 5-8 p.m. Wednesday and following the service on Thursday at a meal in the Fellowship Hall.
