French virtuoso concert organist. Considered by many to be a great interpreter of the organ literature of the French romantic school. Mme Durufle possessed a formidable technical skill at the organ and championed the works of Charles-Marie Widor, Louis Vierne, Jean Langlais, Marcel Dupre, and especially those of her husband, Maurice Durufle. At the age of eleven she was named an organist of the Cathedral of Saint Veran de Cavillon. The following year Mlle Chevalier entered the Avignon Conservatory. Her advanced studies at the organ were soon delayed due to WWII, but she resumed study with Dupre in 1946 at the Paris Conservatory. She was 25 then. In 1953 she was awarded the Gran Prix International Charles-Marie Widor for organ performance and improvisation. Mlle Chevalier then met her future husband, Maurice Durufle, when he substituted for Dupre as her teacher at the conservatory. They were married in 1953 and then she became a co-organist with her husband at the Cathedral of St. Etienne-du-Mont in Paris. The Durufles frequently gave joint concerts together and first toured the United States in 1964.
