Roland Joseph Martin, born December 5, 1927 in Madawaska, Maine, passed away peacefully at home on December 9, 2014. He was surrounded by his loving wife, Liselotte, and wonderful caregivers of Southern Care Hospice at the time of his passing. The family wishes to thank Dr. Heather Haley and the loving staff of Southern Care for their heartfelt help and support in the past several months.
He is preceded in death by daughter Christine Pruitt. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Liselotte, son Michael (and wife, Lisa - Matthews, NC), granddaughter Nicole Savago (and husband Joey Raleigh, NC), granddaughter Brianna Martin (Matthews, NC), sister Eleanor Cyr (New, Britan, Connecticut), sister Celia Macksey (Boston, MA), and son-in-law Chris Pruitt (Fultondale, AL).
He was a very kind, compassionate, humorous, and reserved husband, father, and grandfather. He was an avid golfer and, along with his wife, Liselotte, loved to host parties and entertain guests at their home.
After graduating from South Boston High School, Boston, MA, he served in the US Army for 24 years where he achieved the rank of Command Sergeant Major. His service in the military included assignments in Germany, Japan, Korea, and Redstone Arsenal, AL, which he truly loved and where he determined he would retire as a Southerner.
After serving in the Army, he attended the University of Alabama – Huntsville, where he received a Bachelors and a Masters Degree in Finance & Economics. During his post-military career, he was employed by the Top of Alabama Regional Council on Government (TARCOG), Huntsville Hospital, and SCI, Inc.
You may visit with the family on Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Valhalla Funeral Home from 1:00 PM until 3:30 PM. There will be a funeral service conducted by Bro. Rob Peavy commencing at 3:30 PM in Valhalla’s chapel. The entombment, with Military honors, will immediately follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens.
