John Albert Wickstrom, who normally went by Albert, was born Johan Albert Wikström in Nederlulea, Sweden, eldest of the ten children of Johan Peter Wikström and Ida Maria Nilsdotter. He served in the Swedish military (Boden's Engineer Corps) before emigrating to the United States. He arrived aboard the "Celtic" at Ellis Island, New York, on 24 May 1913.

He married Ellen Nordstrom in Denver, Colorado, on 13 December 1915, and was naturalized as a United States citizen on 14 September 1920 in Cochise County, Arizona. They had two children: Ruth Alice Wickstrom Overman (1916-2002) and George Albert Wickstrom (1921-2013).

Albert and Ellen moved to the Phoenix area after his retirement in 1954 from Phelps Dodge Copper Mining in Douglas, Arizona, after 40 years of service.
