Ralph Hartley, 88, of Garden City died Wednesday evening in a Redfield Care Center.

Funeral services will be 2pm Saturday, May 27, 2005 at the Garden City United Methodist Church. Rev. Warren and Grace Rhodes will be officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden City Cemetery.

Ralph Hartley was born March 13, 1917 in Garden City, SD to Robert and Evelyn (Johnson) Hartley. The family moved to Jud, ND when Ralph was a small child. He attended school in Jud, ND through the eighth grade when he quit school to help on his grandparents farm. He enlisted in the CCC camps where he was stationed in Utah, North Dakota and Minnesota. At the end of his duty, Ralph returned to North Dakota.

Ralph was united in marriage to Hazel Irene Watson on April 6, 1940 in Ellendale, ND. The couple farmed in the area for several years before purchasing a gas station. Ralph took flying lessons during the time he owned the gas station hoping to become spray pilot. During that time, Ralph played in a dance band, and was also the City Marshall in Jud. After 7 years, Ralph sold the gas station and began working as a janitor in the school, as well as doing road construction. Mr. & Mrs. Hartley moved to Garden City where Ralph worked as a janitor for the Garden City School, and also drove bus for the school. When the Garden City school closed, Ralph drove school bus for the Clark schools. Ralph quit driving school bus, and began working for several area farmers. He then assisted Terry Kos when he needed help on the Garden City TV tower. Ralph entered the Faye Wookey Memorial Assisted Living Center in Clark in January 2005, and became a resident of the Beverly Health Care Center in Redfield in April of 2005.

Ralph had many hobbies throughout his life; some of which included; woodworking, electric trains, making model cars, planes, and string ships especially those that actually worked. He also enjoyed rock cutting and polishing, music, photography, and movies, but most of all, he enjoyed he enjoyed his CB and Ham radios. He was a member of ALERT (Affiliated League of the Emergency Radio Teams) and was on the weather net for the tri state area.

Ralph will be sadly missed by his children and their spouses, Gloria (Richard) Rowe, Monticello, MN; Blanch (Vincent) Flanigan, Redfield, SD; Raymond (Charlene) Hartley, Owasso, OK; Bonny (Gordon) Bruns, Little Rock, IA, nine grandchildren, Frank, Bob Rowe, Butch Flanigan, Mark Hartley, Conda Luedtke, Charlotte Lenhard, Roy, Ray and Richard Palmer, 14 great grandchildren; 2 brother's Carroll (Loreyn Hartley of Jud, ND and Lloyd (Anna) Hartley of Garden City, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, Harold, Walter, one sister, June, two grandchildren, Ricky Rowe, Carmela (Flanigan) Toth; one great granddaughter, Elizabeth Palmer.
