Philip Buttaro, 67, passed away October 5, 2014. He had been a resident of the Barstow area since 1986. He was born to Gaetano and Audrey (Langill) Buttaro in Lexington, Mass., on October 13, 1946. Philip was a Vietnam veteran and a retired United States Marine, with rank of Staff Sergeant. After leaving the service he worked as a mechanic with Yellow Freight in Barstow for almost 10 years, after which he was employed as a lead mechanic by various contractors at Fort Irwin. Philip leaves behind Anne, his wife and best friend of 44 years; daughters, Karen Miller of Barstow and Melanie Pyle and her husband, Noah of New Boston, Texas; and grandsons, Ike, Guy, Philip, and Noah. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014 at Mead Mortuary, 36930 Irwin Road.

Philip Served in Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, DMZ area of the Republic of South Vietnam 1967-1968. Philip was a mechanic 3516-3531 with Sgt Ed until Ed rotated home then he became the Motor Pool Sgt. Philip was in many operations and was awarded the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry for his outstanding bravery while in a ambush outside the gate of Gio Linh. While under fire he risked his life to save an Army driver and his truck due to the driver being wounded and unable to drive.
Philip was a true friend, and a honor to have served with him. We kept in touch for many years after Vietnam, he will be greatly missed.
