Burton Cecil Wood of Lewiston died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at Tri-State Memorial Hospital in Clarkston.

Woody was born May 19, 1919, to Cecil L. and Violet E. Wood. His parents were Canadians, but the closest hospital was in Orville, Wash., so he held a dual citizenship. His family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he spent his childhood and youth. After graduating from high school, Woody moved to Detroit and went to work for Chrysler. His love of cars extended through his entire life. He built an innovative sports car from the ground up in the '50s and many midget racers. In his later years he restored an extensive collection of classic cars. Woody enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served in Okinawa because of his ability to speak Japanese. He married Marjorie J. Thorpe Oct. 15, 1948, in Spokane. The couple were the parents of three sons, Steven H., Mark A. and Craig C. Wood.

The family moved to Lewiston in 1964, where Woody became a prominent businessman and was active in numerous community organizations. He was a multi-engine, instrument-rated pilot and flew Republican candidates throughout the state of Idaho campaigning. Woody traveled extensively throughout the world and lived life to the fullest. His wife, Marjorie, died July 21, 1982, and in January 1985 he married Consuelo Valdez in Sacramento, Calif.

He is survived by his wife, Connie; his three sons, Steve, Mark and Craig; six grandchildren, Benjamin Wood, Elisabeth Wood Hower, Abigail Wood Wannacott, Marjorie Wood, Alexander Wood and Robert Wood; seven great-grandchildren, Sophia and Conner Wood, Gaven, Grace and William Howe and Chloe and Avery Wannacott.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie; and his brother, Gordon.
