He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was on the USS Arkansas in the Atlantic and the USS Idaho in the Pacific, penning his war memoirs into publication in 2006. Also in 1942, Tom married Mary Jane Asbury and they were married for 55 years.
Following the war he began a career on Front Street Cotton Row that would last until he retired at age 85 in 2006. He loved the cotton business and served as President of the Memphis Cotton Exchange. He made many friends on Front Street as well as around the world.
All his life he loved sports and was a longtime softball coach at St. Anne Highland as well as an accomplished tennis player. Later in life he became a bridge player which he enjoyed with many friends at the McWherter center. He was a long time communicant of The Church of the Holy Spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Geraldine Miller; brothers, Scott and Robert; sister, Geraldine; and grandson, Andy Weiner.
He is survived by his wife, Bette Wilson Miller; sister, Charlene Dow (Howard); children, Mary Weiner of Murfreesboro, TN, Ginger Boone (Joe), of Murfreesboro, TN, and Tommy Miller (Kathy); step daughter, Carolyn Pegram of Fairview, TN; and grandchildren, Nick Miller (Jenny), Thomas Miller (Nancy), Margaret Boone, and Rachel Boone, both of Columbus, OH. Tom had many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorials can be sent to the Church Health Center, the Salvation Army, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 20 at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
