Alice Newcome Pickett (b Finchville, Shelby County, Kentucky,1888; d. Louisville, November 17, 1971). Physician. Known affectionately as "Ma Pickett" by her medical students, Pickett received her medical degree from the Women's Medical College in Philadelphia in 1909. After four years of working in various hospitals, she moved back to her native state in 1913 and set up practice in Louisville. During World War I she served with the Red Cross as a civilian doctor overseas, where for a time she was the sole physician in a French town of forty thousand. After the war she returned to Louisville and in 1921 joined the medical faculty of the University of Louisville as the head of the obstetrics department. She held that position for the next twenty-five years. Pickett remained a professor of obstetrics at the university until her retirement on January 1, 1952.
Pickett was also noted for her civic contributions. She served on the board of directors of the Louisville chapter of the Red Cross and sat on the advisory committee of the U. S. Children's Bureau. Pickett was instrumental in establishing Kentucky's first prenatal clinic as well as the Birth Control Clinic of Louisville. In 1957 she was the recipient of the University of Kentucky's Sullivan Medal for Service, and in the 1960s the Courier-Journal and the Louisville Times Foundation recognized Pickett's social service by making a sizable contribution to the Red Cross in her name. In 1962 she also received honors from the local YWCA and the Louisville branch of the National Council of Jewish Women. Pickett was cremated and buried in Grove Hill Cemetery, Shelbyville, Kentucky.
