VERA HALBROOKS , 71, was killed instantly Tuesday (21 August 1951) night about six when struck by a car on Highway 22, about three miles north of Lexington. Mrs. Halbrooks atempted to cross the highway in front of the home of John Gibson when she was struck by a car driven by R.M. Halbert, Savannah lawyer who was enroute to a ball game in Huntingdon. Witnesses said the accident was unavoidable. Services were to be conducted Wednesday from Wildersville Baptist Church by the Rev. G.G. Joyner. Burial wa sto be in Sweet Bud Cemetery. Mrs. Halbrooks lived with Mrs. Elam Gibson. The group had just returned from Wildersville in the John Gibson car. Witnesses said Mrs. Halbrooks was cautioned about cars on the highway. They said she watched one car carefully then started across in the path of the vehicle driven by Harbert. Highway patrolmen investigating the accident said late Tuesday night they had not determined if charges were to be filed against the Savannah attorney. Mrs. Halbrooks was pronounced dead upon arrival at Ramer Clinic in a Pafford ambulance which answered the call. She was the widow of the late Joe Halbrooks, who died in 1933 and a son died in 1937. She is survived by a brother, Gar Birdwell of CA; two sisters, Mrs. Cavie Todd of Senath MO and Mrs. Vida Hatch of yuma. Mrs. Halbrooks had lived in Wildersville and Lexington. She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Pafford Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements. Lexington Progress August 24, 1951 Friday
