Edward J. Abbott, Jr., 74, of Norton formerly of Foxboro passed away on Friday April 23, 2010 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro.

He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Jane (McGunigle) Abbott to whom he was wed for 34 years.

Born in Boston, MA on July 28, 1935 he was a son of the late Edward J., Sr. and Mary E. (Walsh) Abbott.

Eddie grew up in the West Roxbury section of Boston and was educated in Boston public schools.

On May 1, 1956 he enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He proudly served his country before being discharged on April 9, 1958 with the rank of Private First Class.

A retired Truck Driver, Mr. Abbott was employed for over 10 years for the Lorrusso Construction Co. in Walpole before retiring in 1998. He had previously been employed for the former Sylvester Ray Construction Co. on the South Shore and also for Walker Brothers in Boston.

Eddie was a former active member and past president of the Family Alliance for the Mentally Ill at Medfield State Hospital. He was an avid Stock Car racing fan of which he owned his own racing car which had the distinction of winning several trophies.

An avid New England Patriots fan, Mr. Abbott enjoyed working with his friends and neighbors at the former Schaffer Stadium in Foxboro. His other hobbies included bowling and he was a former member of the Pete's Dream bowling team in Walpole.

Family was the essence of his life and he loved participating in family events and gatherings. A resident of Norton for the past 10 years, he was a former longtime resident of Foxboro.

He is survived by his loving and devoted children Paula Abbott of Norton, Kevin Benner of Weymouth and the late Katherine DiGiantomasso.

He was the dear brother of Marian Peck of Billerica, William Abbott of Mashpee, Ann Abbott of Florida, Arthur Abbott of Hamilton, Thomas Abbott of Methuen, Richard Abbott of Hatfield and the late Francis Abbott, Madeline McGunigle and John Abbott. Eddie is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

His funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Tuesday April 27th at 8:30 A.M. from the Norton Memorial Funeral Home 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:00 A.M. in St. Mary's Church, Carpenter Street, Foxboro.

Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Foxboro.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday April 26th from 5-8 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Abbott's family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Mansfield Adult Day Health Center 300 Branch St. Mansfield, MA 02048.
