Max L. Hoffman, a citizen of Bemidji for the past 40 years passed away after a couple of days illness at the Bemidji Lutheran Hospital Sunday about midnight.

Mr. Hoffman was a prominent citizen of Bemidji and it is with regret that we learn of his passing. He entered the service in the first world war in Bemidji and has served faithfully in the Bemidji Veterans of Foreign Wars post. He served as Commander for several years and also was a trustee at the time of his death. He was an untiring servant to any family that were in need and always assisted in securing pall-bearers and in any capacity needed during funerals for V.F.W. members. His good nature and happy appearance won for him many trusty friends and he will be greatly missed in that circle as well as in the community.

Mr. Hoffman was born Sept 25, 1899 at Rice Lake, Wisc., and was 47 years of age at the time of his death. He came to Bemidji with his parents when just a small child and January 17, 1925 was married to Miss Esther Johnson at Brainerd.

Surviving are his widow, one daughter Elizabeth and one son, Donovan; three sisters, Mrs. Madeline Prince of Crockett, Calif., Mrs. Eleanor Stevens of Hastings, Minn., and Miss Adeline Hoffman of Oakland, Calif., two brothers, Donovan of Vallejo, Calif., and Keith of Virginia, Minn.

Funeral service will be at the Methodist church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jim Stout, Henry DeRosier, and Mickey McGaurn of the Legion and Clarence McGaurn, Peter Ball and Les Bailey of the VFW. (Northland Times, March 21, 1947)
