Mary Müller was born in 1854 at sea somewhere between Germany and America to Anton Müller and Maria Margarethe Martin. The year of her birth comes from the 1855 census, where Mary is listed with her parents and 2 sisters as being 1 years old. Interestingly enough, the date future records give as her birth date is actually the date this census was recorded. Her father's naturalization record states he arrived in May 1854, giving additional credence to an 1854 b/d.

Her formative years were spent in Cobleskill, Schoharie, New York, a small college/farming community in the Catskills. Her mother, Maria passed when Mary was around 4 or 5. Her father remarrying in 1859 to Anna Kerman who helped raise Mary and her 3 siblings.

She married Charles Augustus Peavey on 15 Sep 1872 at Lawyersville Reformed Church, Lawyersville, Schoharie, New York. Picture a typical New England church painted white with a central steeple and adjoining cemetery.

Sometime after their marriage in 1872, Charles and Mary moved to Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois (likely soon after their marriage as Nellie's birthplace is listed as Illinois). The 1880 census lists them with 3 daughters Nellie, age 7; Mary, age 4; and Jessie, 9 months. The 1900 census includes an additional daughter, Grace, age 11.
