By trade, James was a carpenter and a bridge builder. After moving to California, he was first a hotel keeper in Yuba County; then he prospected for gold; then he was a stockbroker, and then he bought a ranch in Nevada City, California. He married twice. With wife Eliza LINDLEY, he had four children: Charles, James, Ella, and Henry. With his second wife, Olive, he had two children: Herbert and Lisle.
