John Joseph Bryan, Jr., age 71, of Dushore, PA passed away on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Memorial Hospital, Towanda, PA after a brief illness. John was born in Dushore on Jan. 30, 1934 on the family farm, a son of the late John J., Sr. and Lottie Trasco Bryan. He grew up on the farm and also helped his parents and siblings in the operation of their well-known slaughterhouse and meat market, which was located at the farm. He graduated from St. Basil’s High School, a member of the Class of 1951. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry and married the former Gloria Ann Silverstrim of Dushore on Dec. 29, 1956. John worked as a carpenter, plumber, electrician and maintenance man for many years at Miller’s Hardware in Dushore. In earlier years, he was a part-time truck driver. John was a loving spouse, father and grandfather, who dearly loved his two grandchildren. After his retirement, he dedicated most of his time helping his family, friends and neighbors. He especially enjoyed spending free time on the farm with his son, Bonzo. He also loved patrolling Coveytown in his pickup with his dogs and spending time hunting at his. He will be missed by all who knew him. John was a member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church in Dushore. Surviving are his spouse of 48 years, Gloria, at home; two sons and daughter-in-law, Jack and Janet Bryan and James (Bonzo) Bryan, all of Dushore; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Marilyn Bryan, Sugar Run; two sisters, Mary (Mamie) Pastusic and John Leonard, Dushore, and Catherine Hoagland, Towanda; brother-in-law, Theodore Toth, Quakertown; sister-in-law, Agnes Bryan, East Smithfield; two grandchildren, Nicholas Bryan and Emily Bryan, Dushore; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph Bryan, William (Fats) Bryan and Peter Bryan and a sister, Theresa Bryan Toth. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, with the Very Rev. Ronald J. Hughes V.F., pastor of SS Peter and Paul’s Church, Towanda, presiding. Interment was in St. Basil’s Cemetery. Friends called on Monday at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, from 5 to 9 p.m. The family provided flowers. Memorials may be directed to the Dushore Fire and Ambulance Association, PO Box 1, Dushore, PA 18614. Graveside military services were accorded by members of Loyalsock Post #996 American Legion, Dushore. Members passed in review on Monday evening at 7 at the funeral home.
