--Son of Robert Galloway Ross and wife Lucy Ellis. He graduated from Central High School and from NC State University with a BS in Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
--World War II Veteran; U.S. Army. He was in the Signal Corps, serving in Okinawa and Korea from 1943 to 1946.
--Jack married Marcia Black in 1949. They had 3 children: daughter Bonnie and 2 sons John Phelps Ross, Jr.& Rodney Black Ross. 3 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren.
--Occupation: In 1949, Jack and his brother and father founded R.G. Ross and Company, which supplied commercial building material to contractors. Jack was President and worked in the company until retiring in 1992. He had served as associate president of the Carolinas Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association.
--He enjoyed fishing in the surf and piers at his vacation home at N. Myrtle Beach at later at Windy Hill, SC.
