The son of the first governor of New York and Vice President, George Clinton.George Washington Clinton was born on June 6, 1771 in New York, New York to George Washington and Cornelia (Tappen) Clinton. His father served as Vice President of the United States in the Jefferson and Madison Presidencies. Like his father, he followed a life in political circles. George served as a Representative from New York and a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1801. In addition, he served as member of the State assembly in 1804 and 1805. George was elected as a Republican to the Eighth and Ninth Congresses "to fill the vacancies caused by the resignation of Samuel L. Mitchell". He was later reelected to the Tenth Congress and served from February 14, 1805, to March 3, 1809. He married Ann Floyd. They were the parents of at least one child - George William. He died on March 27, 1809 in Wappingers Creek, New York.
