Robert A. Herd, Sr., 77, a resident of Cape Girardeau, MO, died Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter, MO. He was born May 31, 1935 in Springfield, MO to the late John Earl and Jeanetta Mae (Thomas) Herd. Robert served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His career lasted 28 years in the military and his jobs included; Operations Sergeant, Intelligence Sergeant, Communications Sergeant and Food Service Sergeant. Robert also worked for the Postal Service for 28 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 63, V.F.W. Post 3838, Governor of the Moose Lodge in Santa Maria, CA, President of the Eagles in California, Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America for over 35 years in both California and Missouri. He enjoyed building model railroads and spending time with his family. He is survived by his children, Cynthia Cruse of Jackson, MO, Robert Herd, Jr. and Donald Lee Herd, both of Atascadero, CA; brother, Charles �Mickey� Herd of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Shirley Nixon of Florida; grandchildren, Dawn and Tiffany Herd of Atascadero, CA and Kristina Cruse of Jackson, MO. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Herd, February 20, 2013 and a son, Steven Herd. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 28, 2013 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Ford & Sons Mt. Auburn Funeral Home. A graveside service will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, MO with Rev. Donny Ford officiating. Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
