J. Fred Durbin, 68, Shelbyville, Ind., who had been in failing health several years, died at his residence Saturday, Sept. 21, 1991.

He was born in Noble Township, Shelby County, Sept. 28, 1922, the son of William and Bertha Stickford Durbin. On Nov. 27, 1941, he married Virginia Turner, and she survives. in 1979, he retired from the Shumaker Brothers Paving Co., where he was an equipment mechanic. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, and a member of the Waldron Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Durbin, Shelbyville, Ind.; three sons, John R. Durbin, Carmel, Ind., James L. Durbin, Greenwood, Mo., and Leslie William Durbin, Indianapolis; three daughters, Mrs. Richard (Nancy) Esters, Fairland, Ind., Mrs. Herbert (Alice) Caleau and Mrs. Charles (Deanna) Thurston, both of Shelbyville, Ind.; three brothers, Willard Durbin, Dallesport, Wash., Dale Durbin, Homer, Ind., Harold Durbin, Blue Ridge, Ind.; three sisters, Katherine Comstock, and Joan Ragsdale, both of Shelbyville, and Janice Speheger, Floressant, Mo.; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Glenn E. George Funeral Home, St. Paul, Ind. with the Rev. Helen Riley officiating.

Burial will be int he Van Pelt Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. today.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW and the American Legion of Shelbyville, Ind.
