He was a graduate of Iroquois High School. He served in the U.S. Army as an air mechanic during World War II. He worked as an electrician at the former Hammermill Paper and retired in 1975. He enjoyed the outdoors.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Thomas, Louis, Kenneth, Uhbert (d 10/1982 age 68 in FL), and Edward French.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elvira Brugger French; three daughters, Patricia Thompson and her husband, Kenneth, of Memphis, Tenn., Elizabeth Kimmy and her husband, Larry, of Mobile, Ala., and Ruth Schultz and her husband, Thomas, of North East; a son, Edward French of Erie; four sisters, Betty Higby of Erie and Nancy Clorley, Sally Yates and Myrtle Lynch, all of Lawrence Park; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery.
