Descendant of John Sanford, former "president" of the 13 colonies, founder of Portsmouth, Rhode Island!
Born in Beverly, Mass., and raised in Summerville, Hants County, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Morris and Mary Louise (Mosher) Sanford.
A graduate of Acadia University and after teaching one year at home in Hants County she came to Cape Breton in 1935 to teach in Upper Baddeck school. While here she met and married her husband of 63 years. She was active in many community groups and was a member of Greenwood United Church holding positions as an Elder and Sunday School teacher, UCW, Home and School Association, Alderwood Working Council, and many other local groups. She also volunteered for many years with Dr. C.L. MacMillan at the public health clinic, tutored many students and visited regularly at Alderwood.
She is survived by daughters, Marilyn Gillis, Elinor (Archie) MacDonald, Nancy (Robert) Smith, Marjorie (Michael) Soares; and sons, Gordon (Vera), Duncan (Beth), Alastair (Karen) and Raymond MacLean, son in-law Francis Lamey; 35 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband (John J.), twin brother, Stanley Sanford, sisters, Leone (Ted) Lemon, Louise (Harold) O'Brien, son, John Freeman (Jackie), daughter, Anne (Gillis) Lamey, grandsons, Harry MacDonald Jr., Harold MacDonald, John (Jackie) MaDonald, and great-grandson, Andrew MacDonald-Gatto.
The body will be resting at Greenwood United Church, Baddeck, with visitation Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at 1 p.m. and service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Alison Etter officiating. Burial will be in Harbour View Cemetery, St. Ann’s.
Family flowers only by request. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Greenwood United Church, St. Andrews United, Baddeck Forks, or charity of your choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck.
