Armato was stationed in the Philippine Islands when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He lived through the attack on Clark Airfield ten hours later.
On April 9, 1942, he became a Prisoner of War when Bataan was surrendered to the Japanese. He took part in the death march and was held as a POW at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan. He was sent to Japan and held at Fukuoka #3 until liberated at the end of the war.
He returned to Chicago and later moved to San Diego.
