Henry Pratt Smith died in his home, No. 134 W thirty-fourth street, yesterday from consumption, after a lingering illness of several months, although he was confined to the house about three weeks. He was born in Philadelphia in 1829. Mr. Smith began his business in the firm of Smith, Williams & Co., dealers in cotton and woollen (sic) goods in Philadelphia, with branch houses in New York and Boston. On the dissolution of the firm, ten years later, the business was continued under the name of HP and WP Smith. The business has been in voluntary liquidation for some time, the firm desiring to close it up. Mr Smith was well known in the trade and was a member of the Merchants' Club of New York, the Union League Club of Philadelphia, and until two years ago of the New York Club.
He took an active part in the exercises at the Centennial Exhibition and was one of the committee that received and entertained President and Mrs Hayes when they visited the exhibition.
