Miss Merrill, the daughter of the late Mr. Gilbert F. Merrill, is a graduate of Charles School, Cambridge, Mass., the Boston School of Occupational Therapy, and Tufts College. For the past two years she has been in charge of the occupational therapy department department at the Norton Memorial Infirmary. Dr. McPheeters, a graduate of Lafayette College and the University University of Louisville School of Medicine, is a senior resident physician at the Norton Psychiatric Psychiatric Clinic. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on October 20, 2010: Phyllis M. McPheeters, age 86, of Sandy Springs, passed away on Sunday, October 17, 2010. Phyllis M. McPheeters was born in Philadelphia, PA, on 3 May 1924, the daughter of Gilbert F. Merrill, a copy reader for the Saturday Evening Post, and Doris (Cyr) Merrill, originally from Malden, MA. After her father developed a fatal blood disorder, when Phyllis was about ten years old, the family moved back to Malden where she completed school, graduating from Malden High School and then attending business school and working for a time for a jeweler in Boston. She then graduated from Boston School of Occupational Therapy with a combined baccalaureate degree from Jackson College of Tufts University and took an internship at a mental hospital in Rhode Island. Phyllis then took a position as Occupational Therapist at the Psychiatric Unit of the Norton Infirmary in Louisville, Kentucky, where she met her husband, Dr. Harold L. McPheeters who was a resident in psychiatry there. They were married at Robinson Memorial Methodist Church in Malden, Massachusetts, on Christmas Eve, 1951. While he served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict, they lived at times in Annapolis, Maryland and at San Diego, California. Upon completion of his Navy service, they lived in Schenectady, New York, where he worked at the Ellis Hospital for a year. In 1955, they moved back to Louisville, Kentucky, when he took a Position as Assistant Commissioner and later Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Mental Health. During those years Phyllis was busy as a mother and homemaker. In 1964 they moved again to Albany, New York, where her husband worked as Deputy Commissioner of the New York Department of Mental Hygiene for one year. Then they moved in 1965 to their present home in Sandy Springs, GA, where he was Director of the Health and Human Services Program at the Southern Regional Education Board. Phyllis is the mother of four children: David L. McPheeters, of Snellville; Doris E. Guidry, of Braselton; Thomas C. McPheeters of Easley, SC; and Amy L. Allen of Lawrenceville. She is also survived by a sister, Edith Carey of Upton, MA. After the children began graduating from high school, Phyllis returned to work, briefly as Occupational Therapist at the Georgia Retardation Center in Dunwoody, and later as Document Librarian at the Southern Company when its offices were located a Perimeter Center. She has had a major interest in her family history, and together she and her husband have traveled the nation researching their family lines. Phyllis has been a long-time member of St. James United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Ruth Circle. She is also a member of the Sandy Springs AARP Chapter, and of the Sandy Springs Woman's Club where she served as President for one year. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, October 21, 2010 at St. James United Methodist Church.
