Helen E. Kreiger 1913 - 2006 HOLLAND - Helen E. (Serafino) Kreiger, 92, of Lakeshore Dr., passed away April 20 at Wingate of West Springfield. Born November 2, 1913 in Springfield, she was the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Phoebe (Miner) Serafino. Holland was a summer vacation area for Helen and her family since the early 1950's and it became her permanent residence in 1970. Helen was employed as a secretary at the former Palmer Goddell & Kenney in Springfield until her retirement in 1976. After her retirement she became very involved in town politics in Holland. She attended every town meeting and worked the polls at every election. Helen served on the town's first Old Home Day Committee in 1983. She was a charter member of the Holland Conservation Commission, on which she served for more than 28 years, and worked as secretary of an ad-hoc lake organization for more than ten years. Helen was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by the Board of Selectmen during the years of 1998-2001, was the 2001 recipient of the Edward A. Blodgett Outstanding Citizen Plaque and has had conservation land named in her honor. Most recently, Helen had an instrumental role in the development of Holland's new Senior Center. In addition to her great energy and love for Holland, Helen loved and was an active member of the St. Christopher Roman Catholic Church in Brimfield and enjoyed antiques, playing golf and tatting. Mrs. Kreiger is survived by her children, Joanne Meyer of Westfield, Max III with whom she lived, and Janet Freeman of Springfield along with seven grandchildren; Leanne Robillard, Pat, Christopher and Keith Meyer, Matt and Kate Freeman, Shelby Kreiger, and six great grandchildren. Helen also leaves two sisters, Theresa Yacovone of Longmeadow, and Marjorie Serafino of Springfield. Besides her husband Max Jr. (2003), she was predeceased by a son, David (1955) and brother Joseph Serafino. A visitation will be held Tuesday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Beers & Story Palmer Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Christopher Roman Catholic Church in Brimfield. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helen's memory to Holland Senior Center c/o Friends of Holland Seniors, P.O. Box 31, Holland, MA 01521.
