Prominent Milwaukee physician born in St. Mary's County, Maryland. His ancestors immigrated to America long before the Revolutionary War. In 1847 he came to Milwaukee, and in March of 1855 he was elected Secretary of the Milwaukee City Medical Association. In March of 1876, he was called to the door of his home and shot by an insane woman who at one time had been his patient. While residing at a distance, she conceived the delusion that a group of Milwaukee physicians were "pursing her with medicated vapors." Resolving to kill them all, she purchased a gun, and hastened to Milwaukee by train. The name of Dr. Garner happened to be the first on her list. Her prompt arrest saved the others. Mrs. Wilner was committed to the Insane Asylum where she was under constant surveillance until she died.
