Mildred lived in Millville, Vineland, and Port Elizabeth during her childhood. She was a member of the class of 1934 at Millville High School.

Mildred met the love of her life while working at Newberry's 5 & 10 on Landis Ave. in Vineland. She and Loren Doughty Holmes were married for 21 years until Loren's premature death from complications of Multiple Sclerosis. They always considered "I Found A Million Dollar Baby in the 5 & 10 Cent Store" "their song".

During their marriage, Loren & Mildred had four children. They raised their family at various locations in Vineland, Pleasantville, and Ocean City, NJ and Avon Park, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale, FL. Loren died at the home of his parents, Joseph H. and Floy Shull Holmes on Main Rd. near Clayville Switch in Millville on Dec. 2nd 1957.

After her husband's illness and death and throughout the rest of her life Mildred showed us all the meaning of the words courage and survivor. She moved her family to Ocean City, NJ were she embarked on her life as a single mom, sole provider, and working career woman. Her first job in Ocean City was at Murphy's 5 & 10. She soon moved on to the Lillian Albus Shop on Asbury Ave. & on the Boardwalk, where she worked for many years as a personal shopper for private clients and was known for her innate flair and sense of fashion.

While living in Ocean City, she met and married Edward P. Trout in 1962. Ed had two sons, Eddie Jr. and Walter, and the family grew to include them. Ed Trout preceded Mildred in death.

After her marriage to Ed, Mildred became the dental assistant and receptionist for Dr. John F. Raab, DDS in Linwood, NJ. Mildred and Dr. Raab worked together for many years and she became well known and admired throughout the community for her sunny and spirited disposition.

In 1972, Mildred renewed a friendship with her old fourth grade classmate LeRoy E. Cramer from Millville, and then they became husband and wife on Feb. 16th, 1974. Roy and Mildred lived in Millville throughout their marriage. They were together until Roy died suddenly in 1984.

Mildred then moved to Marmora to be near many of her children and grandchildren who lived at the Jersey Shore. She also resided in Northfield before moving to Wesley-by-the-Bay in Ocean City.

Mildred's passing leaves behind her son, Joseph E. "Ted" Holmes and his wife Joyce (Harkins) of Boone, CO., her daughter Carol Holmes Keene and husband Larry of San Juan Capistrano, CA. Her son Loren W. "Bubba" Holmes of Somers Point preceded her in death on April 25, 2004 and her son Robert L. "Bob" Holmes of Linwood died one month later on May 25, 2004. Bob's wife Sherry (Pasqueletto)Holmes of Linwood survives Mildred as well.

Mildred was the proud and loving grandmother to Teddy Holmes of Golden, CO, Jay Holmes and wife Rhonda of Sarasota, FL, Cathy Keene and husband Alan Sims of Big Bear Lake, CA, Joanne Keene Hall and her husband James of Hawthorne, CA, Robert L. Holmes, Jr. and his wife Nastassia of Beverly Hills, CA, Jennifer Holmes of Northfield, NJ, Jason Holmes and his wife Angie of Lakeside, CA, Steven Holmes of Los Angeles, CA, Sandra Holmes Stanton and husband Ed of Northfield, NJ, Jaime Joy Holmes of Sherman Oaks, CA, and Bailey and Alex Dawson of Linwood.

Her family tree grew to include her precious great grandchildren, Morgan Holmes, Emma and Adeline Hall, Rebecca Ayers and Emily Parker, Jacobe and Trevor Holmes, and Loryn and Hanna Stanton. To them she will always be their Grandmom Cramer and her presence in their lives will be missed.

Mildred is also survived by her adopted sister Grayce Weibley of Elkton, MD, her loving and devoted sister-in-law, Ruth Ann (Holmes) Grassman of Millville, NJ and her cherished daughter-in-law, Jutta "JJ" Holmes of Somers Point, NJ. Mildred's family also included many nieces, nephews, and especially her dear cousin Maxine Ausburn of Cedarville who will miss her.

Some of Mildred's favorite things to do were dancing, visiting with her family, sewing and creating her own clothes, reading, and shopping.

She made friends wherever she went throughout her life. Whenever she would visit any of us, as she was getting out of her car, she would always say, "I'm not staying!" Well, this time she meant it!

The Cord
We are connected,
My child and I, by
An invisible cord
Not seen by the eye...

It's not like the cord
That connects us 'til birth
This cord can't been seen
By any on Earth...

This cord does it's work
Right from the start.
It binds us together
Attached to my heart...

I know that it's there
Though no one can see
The invisible cord
From my child to me...

The strength of this cord
Is hard to describe.
It can't be destroyed
It can't be denied...

It's stronger than any cord
Man could create
It withstands the test
Can hold any weight...

And though you are gone,
Though you're not here with me,
The cord is still there
But no one can see...

It pulls at my heart
I am bruised...I am sore,
But this cord is my lifeline
As never before...

I am thankful that God
Connects us this way
A mother and child
Death can't take it away...

This is a poem I wrote for my mother for her birthday in 2000:
"It's my Mom"

Everywhere she goes, everybody knows
That Mildred is my beautiful Mother….

She smiles and she greets all the people that she meets
In the aisles of the stores, and the rows….

She drives 'round the town, and out of town too
In her car called an Oldsmobile, in a jaunty shade of blue…

From her head to her feet she is dressed like a queen
As all through her life she always has been…

With a twinkle in her eye and high heels on her toes
She creates a sensation whenever she goes…

Oh, "so you're the lucky girl" they all say to me
To have such a lovely Mother who is all of eighty-three!
