Shot by police while apparently burglarizing a home in Shreveport's Eden Gardens neighborhood. Shot three times.

Release from Shreveport police:

A local man has been shot and killed this morning after allegedly attacking his girlfriend and a Shreveport Police patrol officer.

At approximately 3:48 a.m. this morning, Shreveport Police patrol officers were dispatched to a home in the 7600 block of Gideon Street relative to a disorderly person. The complainant, 45 year old Sally Scott, advised dispatchers that her live-in boyfriend, Alberta Brooks, was causing problems and she wanted him to leave. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the suspect had battered Ms. Scott and fled the scene. Ms. Scott suffered minor injuries. Officers circulated the area and briefly spotted Brooks near Gideon Street, but he ran from them and was able to evade capture. Officers completed an affidavit for an arrest warrant charging Brooks with one count of domestic abuse battery. Ms. Scott, apparently fearing for her safety, left her residence.

At 6:59 a.m. this morning, Ms. Scott returned to her home on Gideon Street and observed the front door had been forced open and a window was open as well. She called police and two patrol officers responded. Upon arrival, the officers searched the house and located no suspects inside. One of the officers got back in service and left the residence while the other officer remained on scene to complete a report. Ms. Scott heard dogs barking behind her home and indicated to the officer she felt Alberta Brooks may be in her backyard. As the officer checked the backyard, he observed a male suspect near the rear of the home. The suspect saw the officer and ran to the front of the residence and entered the dwelling through the open front door. The officer pursued the suspect on foot and could hear Ms. Scott screaming. The officer entered the house and engaged the suspect, who at that time was armed with a screwdriver. The officer gave repeated commands for the suspect to drop the weapon, but he refused. The suspect, still armed with the screwdriver, aggressively approached the officer who discharged his department issued Taser at the suspect. This did not stop the suspect's attack and the officer was forced to pull his handgun and fire at the assailant.

The suspect, identified as 40 year old Alberta Brooks, was struck three times by gunfire and subsequently transported to LSUHSC where he was later pronounced deceased. Detectives and crime scene investigators were immediately dispatched and their investigation is ongoing. The results of this investigation will be turned over to the Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office for review. Chief of Police Henry Whitehorn has placed the officer who fired the shots on paid administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.
