Born in Langenbielau Prussia (now Bielawa, Poland) to Friedrich Wilhelm Stephan and Anna Karoline "Caroline" (Schobel) Stephan.

Immigrated on the "Charles Dickens" from Hamburg, landing July 14, 1877 into Moretone Bay, Queensland. The ship was placed in quarantine at Peel Island. There was an outbreak of measles on board. She was released from quarantine on 10 August 1877.

Married Anna Wilhelmine Julianne "Elizabeth" Beitzel.

Father of August Wilhelm Theodor Stephan, Herman Wilhelm Fredrick Stephan, Rosina Bertha Augusta Stephan, Anna Louisa Stephan, and Clarence Clifford Stephan.
