January 19, 2010 (BENSENVILLE, Ill.) --
Police are looking for the driver of a vehicle that may have been racing another car before a deadly crash in the northwest suburbs. Two teenagers- Adrian Villegas, 16, and Jesse O. Aragon-Rodriguez, 17- died in the crash on Monday afternoon.
Witnesses told police the 2002 Honda they were riding in and another vehicle were speeding down York Road Monday afternoon when the driver lost control and struck a tree. The vehicle split in half upon impact.
The driver of the other vehicle did not stop after the crash.
"Once the accident happened, the other car, which is a dark colored or silver colored car, continued north on York Road from the scene," said Frank Kosman, Bensenville police chief.
Aragon-Rodriguez, who was driving his family's 2002 Honda convertible, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:45 p.m. Monday. Villegas died en route to the hospital.
Although police say drag racing is not common in the area, some residents say it wouldn't surprise them if that's what happened.
"It could be possible because right here there are a lot of speeding cars. We see them all the time, no matter what time of day it is," said Edwina Hernandez, resident.
Aragon-Rodriguez and Villegas were best friends. Both were juniors at Fenton High School, where they were well-liked among other students. Aragon-Rodriguez was on the junior varsity soccer team and students say on Monday night the team dressed in black and placed flowers at the scene of the crash.
"A lot of people during the passing periods, walk around with their heads down. You can really tell who knew them," said Patrick Ciezki, student.
Some students stayed home to mourn while others needed help that the school provided.
"We have counselors going into each of the boys' classes and we have other counselors social workers on hand if the students want to come down and talk," said Todd Leden, Fenton High School principal.
