James Simon Sloan was born January 12, 1858. He married Virginia Clementine (Clemmie) Lawlis on February 8, 1888 in Clark County, Arkansas. He was the son of William Sloan and Lenora Browning. They had six children: Nora A.,Ernest Edward, Willie Estella, George A., Gussie, and James M. Sloan.
He was referred to as "Little Jim" since his uncle and grandfather were also named James Sloan. He was a Charter member of the Trinity Methodist Church in Clark County, Arkansas before moving his family to Texas to farm sometime after 1900.
