Betty Wolbrette Akchin, 88, died peacefully on December 26, 2014 in Baton Rouge of complications from Alzheimer's Disease. She was born in New Orleans on August 8, 1926, the youngest of two children to Henri and Lillian Wolbrette. The family relocated to Shreveport in the 1930's where Betty was a graduate of Byrd High School. She graduated from Sophie Newcomb College in 1946 at the age of 19, and worked for several years in Chicago, where she met her husband, David Akchin. The couple married in 1949 and moved to Shreveport the following year. The family relocated to Baton Rouge in 1976. Betty was employed as a bookkeeper for a number of years at Fraenkel Wholesale Furniture Company. She was for many years a member of Congregation B'nai Israel. She is survived by four children: Don Akchin of Baltimore, MD, Debi Akchin Graham of St. Amant, LA, as well as Brian Akchin and Mark Akchin, both of Baton Rouge. She was the proud grandmother to seven and great-grandmother to two. Her husband of 48 years, David Akchin, and her older brother, Henri Wolbrette II, preceded her in death. Betty is remembered by her children, grandchildren and cousins as a patient teacher and a great cook whose primary concern was always for the happiness and well being of her family. A memorial service will be held Sunday January 4th, 2015 at 10:30 am at Congregation B'nai Israel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Bridgeway Healthcare and Hospice (13702 Coursey Blvd, Ste 5B, Baton Rouge, LA 70817), St. Jude Children's Reseach Hospital (501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105) or Sylvia Steiner Religious School at Congregation B'nai Israel (3354 Kleinert Ave, Baton Rouge, LA 70806)
