Avis Angela Martin, the daughter of Isaac and Rosa Martin, grew up in Stoddard County, Missouri.
In the 1930's, Avis and her sister Eva placed an ad in a lonely hearts club magazine. Eva was the first to receive a response from Thomas Hartnell in Minnesota but she had already met someone else.
Then Thomas wrote to Avis and they corresponded for two years. In February of 1933, Thomas went to Missouri to meet Avis in person. He was so kind and good that he quickly won her heart. They were married on February 25, 1933 in Bloomfield, Missouri.
She called him her Valentine because they first met the day after Valentines Day.
Thomas and Avis had six children: Alice, Betty, Sonja, Helen, Fred and Walter.
Thomas and Avis farmed in northern Minnesota until 1942 when they moved to Gasville, Arkansas where Thomas worked on the Arkansas Dam. By December of 1943, Thomas had decided that the job was too dangerous so the family moved back up to the farm. Eventually they moved into International Falls where they remained for the rest of their lives.
Avis was a faithful wife and mother who prepared Thomas' favorite British foods, including a suet pudding called Spotty Eye.
When Avis died, she was buried beside Thomas in the Riverdale Cemetery in Border.
