It appears that the family name for James' father's family was "Croskery," and most other members of the family immigrating to the U.S. and Canada used "Coskery." James Coskrey's father may have been the first in his family to change the surname spelling to "Coskrey."

James' grandfather was likely named John "Crosskery" or "Croskerry" back in Northern Ireland. Original Irish name was possibly "Coscraigh."

James died sometime after 1 Jul 1841, in Pike County, Alabama. James' wife appears to have been dead sometime before the family immigrated to Sumter County, South Carolina on 24 Jan 1812.
