Robert Louis Hoskins, 84, of Columbia, died Friday, January 2, 2015. Born June 1, 1930, in Springfield, Missouri, he was a son of the late Thomas Everette Hoskins and Freda Bernice Taylor Hoskins.

A graduate of Springfield High School, Robert attended Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University). He was drafted into the US Army where he served in the Signal Corps. Stationed first at Ft. Mammoth, NJ, Robert spent the entire Korea Conflict at Ft. Jackson because of his Signal Corps expertise.

Following his military service, he was hired by Southern Bell in Columbia, and retired in 1987 after a 40 year career. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, the Columbia Lions Club, the DAV, American Legion and the VFW. Robert was ordained deacon as a young man of 21, and served as chairman of the deacons and in many leadership capacities in the two churches he was a member of in Columbia – Colonial Heights Baptist Church, and since the late 1950’s, North Trenholm Baptist Church. Robert also coached Little League baseball for many years. He enjoyed many hours watching baseball and Gamecock football.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Ann Stubblefield Hoskins; daughter and son-in-law, Anne Hoskins (G. Bryant) Wright of Marietta, GA; his daughter-in-law, Sherri Hammond Hoskins of Columbia; grandsons, George (Megan) Wright, III of Acworth, GA, Andrew (Brooke) Wright of Marietta, GA; David (Kate) Wright of Athens, GA; Rob Hoskins, Ryan Hoskins; and his granddaughter, Becca Hoskins, all of Columbia; four great-grandchildren, McKenna Wright, Brody Wright, Anna Beth Wright and Everett Wright all of Acworth, GA; as well as his nephew, Stuart Hoskins of Gainesville, FL.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Royce Hoskins; and brothers, Gene and Taylor Hoskins.

The memorial service for Mr. Hoskins will be held 11 o’clock, Monday, January 5th, at North Trenholm Baptist Church, with Dr. Steve Cloud, The Rev. R. Joseph Copeland, son-in-law, The Rev. Dr. Bryant G. Wright, and grandson, The Rev. B. George Wright, III officiating. The family will greet friends following the service. Private burial will precede the service.
