Noted druggist of the 20th century. Formed Paris Medicine company in 1886. Invented Groves Tasteless Chill Tonic, which became a household name, even outselling Coca Cola, in the late 1800's. It was a standard issue item to British Army troops, going into maleria infested lands. Gave a large endowment for education in Paris Tennessee. The High School named for him, celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. (2006)

This Grove memorial monument stands just inside the gates of the old Paris City Cemetery in Paris, Tenn.. A wrought iron fence surrounds the graves of Edwin W. Grove, his wife, Gertrude Matthewson Grove and 5 other members of the Family. This picture made on May 5, 2006.

A die-cut advertisement made to stand on a druggist’s counter top. The product was GROVE’S TASTELESS CHILL TONIC produced and sold by Edwin Wiley Grove. A tonic of quina tree bark was discovered to cure malaria early in the 17th century, but quinine is very bitter. The British solved the problem by mixing it with gin, but it was Grove who devised a lemon flavored drink which he advertised as a tasteless chill tonic.

The majority of patent medicine vendors sold products which depended on the effect of either alcohol or opiates for return sales. Others got by on the ‘placebo effect.’ Medical historian, James Harvey Young, referred to these entrepreneurs as “Toadstool Millionaires or “Medical Messiahs,” coincidently the title of his two books on the government crackdown on quack medicines which in 1906 led to the formation of the Food and Drug Administration.

E.W. Grove was not in this category. He was not among the 100s of individual and medicine firms investigated by the American Medical Association and eventually driven out of business or had their products brought into compliance with the law. The reason being that his product actually cured the patient. Malaria is caused by a parasite carried primarily by mosquitoes and has devastated whole populations and Grove’s product helped control the disease wherever it was available.

This advertising trade card was produced by Henderson Litho Co., Cincinnati. They were in business under this name from 1896 until 1925, but a testimonial on the reverse of the card is dated 1893 so it was from their early days. BZS archive
