Born in Charleston, Coles County, IL. He was a son of Sylvester and Rachel (Walker) Dunbar. In 1858 Charles married Miss Charlotte B. Walker of New York, she died March 1, 1865, leaving one daughter, Emma, who became Mrs. Flemming of Des Moines, IA. In July of 1868 he remarried to Mrs. Myra A. (Shaw) Fisk, and they had one son, Louis S. Mrs. Dunbar had two sons, Ferdinand C. and Charles W. Fiske.
Charles Dunbar was an attorney with the largest law library in the county.
