Margaret Brandon was the daughter of Sir William Brandon, knight, and Elizabeth Wingfield, who was possibly his second wife. Margaret was kinswoman to Charles, Duke of Suffolk. Sir William was the owner of the manor of St. Mary Cray, and must have had no sons, for at his death, Margaret inherited the manor, and Hugh became the owner of the manor. Margaret & Hugh had two sons, John and Richard. According to the Visitation of Kent, Hugh died at St. Mary Cray in 1503.

Sir William Brandon's will was composed in 1475, before the marriage of his youngest daughters. He mentions Mary, Anne, Margaret the elder, Margaret the younger, and Katherine. Daughters Eleanor and Elizabeth are not mentioned as they were already married. The fact that there are two daughters Margaret could indicate that he was married twice and had a daughter Margaret by each wife. Also, the fact that the younger daughter inherited the manor of St. Mary Cray could indicate that William was possessed of the manor through his second wife, Elizabeth Wingfield. The will of Elizabeth (Wingfield) Brandon mentions daughters Elizabeth Leventhorp, Anne Sydney, Eleanor Glemham, Margaret Lovel, Katherine Gourney. The younger Margaret is not mentioned, possibly because she had already died. Hugh Manning and his wife only had two sons and no other children, possibly indicating that she died shortly after the birth of her second son, about 1500. She died in St. Mary Cray and was buried in the churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin Church there. This church has become, through conolidation, St. Mary with St Paulina’s in Bromley, Greater London.
