RALPH T. KILGORE - 76

PORTLAND -- Ralph T. Kilgore, 76, of Coach Road in South Portland, passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2007 at Maine Medical Center from heart complications.

Ralph was born on Aug. 22, 1930 in Moro Plantation in Island Falls to his parents, Renfrew and Gladys Condon Kilgore. Ralph had five siblings, Buddy, Dale, Martha, Dawn and Janet.

Ralph is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann A. Kilgore; his son, Kevin A. Kilgore of Tennessee; his daughter and son-in-law, Ginger D. and Dr. Peter J. Garramore of Scarborough; and three beautiful grandchildren, Alexis, Gabrielle and Samuel, also from Tennessee.

Ralph was in the United States Marine Corp Reserves from 1948 through 1950.

Ralph was an active teacher of Psychology, Political Science and Human Relations at Southern Maine Community College until he fell ill on March 19, 2007. Prior to his work at the local college, he was Executive Director of the Southern Regional Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Council, Inc.

Ralph's career also was at the local Boys Training Center in South Portland. He had been the Assistant Superintendent for Rehabilitative Services at the facility followed by Director of Education. He was directly involved in setting up an educational system, both academic and vocational, as well as overseeing the writing implementation of curriculums in grades five to 12 and building new academic and vocational schools. The school received worldwide recognition for its innovative programs, while under Ralph's watchful command.

Ralph was principal of two South Portland elementary schools, Lincoln and Redbank, at the same time prior to working at the Boys Training Center.

Ralph was a graduate of Portland High School, Class of 1947. He received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Gorham State College in 1952. He then received his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Maine in 1961.

Ralph was a member of the First Congregational Church of South Portland since 1964. Ralph was very active in the community as well. He was Chairman in an effort to raise $750,000 for the Boys Club of South Portland. He was named Citizen of the Year in 1973 from the South Portland Lion's Club. He sat on the South Portland Planning Board; Maine Teacher's Representative Assembly; was President of the South Portland Teacher's Association; was on the South Portland Library Advisory Board and was President of the Sunset Park Little League Association. Ralph was also very active in raising funds for the Ge Erskine Memorial Park in South Portland.

Ralph was an outdoorsman. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting; although he enjoyed leaving the wildlife, he was fortunate enough to see where he found it. Ralph also loved his family pets. He had a deaf white cat named Lucky for over 21 years and a dwarf rabbit named Oscar for several years as well. Ralph enjoyed taking long walks with his wife, Ann, fishing with his son, Kevin and raising roses and lilies with his daughter, Ginger.

Ralph always did what he could for others and expected nothing in return. It was not uncommon for him to snow blow several neighbors' driveways after a snow storm.

Ralph was a Civil War buff and it was not uncommon for him to tell family and friends what happened 250 years ago today.

Ralph's two dear friends, Dan Fortin and Jack Garvin, both of South Portland were at his side during his brief illness and will miss talking about life and politics over a good cup of coffee.

For Christmas 2006, Ralph, Ann, Peter and Ginger drove to Tennessee to see Kevin and his triplets. That will always be a favorite family memory.

Visiting hours will be on Thursday, March 29, 2007 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A funeral will be on Friday, March 30, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 301 Cottage Rd., South Portland.
