John Ahern was born at Carroll, Nebraska, on June 11, 1892, the son of Irish immigrants John Ahern and Ellen O’Reagan. John was raised on a farm northeast of Carroll. He graduated from Carroll High School and then attended the teachers college at nearby Wayne.
On January 29, 1917 he was married to Mary Lillian Duffy at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne. They made their home at Carroll for two years and then moved to a farm near Madelia, Minnesota. They retired in 1960 and in 1972 moved from the farm to Madelia. Lillian died at St. James, Minnesota, on January 5, 1976. John died at Madelia on July 1, 1988.
His funeral was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Madelia on July 5, 1988, with burial at Calvary Cemetery in Madelia. John was survived by four sons and two daughters, 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Maurice, Cornelius, Robert, William and James; two sisters, Kathryn (Thompson) and Mary (Finn); and a grandson.
