She was a daughter of Hobart Stratton Horton and Octavia L. Udell. She married James Clark Gay Sr. on Jan. 13, 1881 in Pike county, Illinois.

Rockport--Mrs. Josephine Gay, mother of Brig. Gen. Hobart Gay, commander of American troops in Munich, died at her home here Saturday afternoon. She was 88 years old. Mrs. Gay was a native of Rockport and lived her entire life here. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Hobart Horton, who had migrated to Pike county from the deep south. Gen. Gay is scheduled to be relieved of his command on Oct. 12 and had anticipated a visit with his mother. A right hand man of Gen. Patton in the Third Army, Gay was riding with Patton at the time of the jeep accident that killed Patton. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Harry Blunt of Rockport and Mrs. Robert Bonny of Roswell, New Mexico; Gen. Gay, Henry and Lawrence of Rockport, James of Seattle and Irving of Denver. Her grandchildren include veterans of the army, navy, WACs and Waves. The remains were taken to the Eddy Funeral Home in Pittsfield where they will remain until Monday afternoon. Funeral services are tentatively set for 2 pm Tuesday at the Rockport Methodist Church with the Rev. Lee Baldwin officiating.
