Helen Genik was born in or near Liucha, Western Ukraine near Kolomea. She was the daughter of Kyrolo (Cyril) Genik and Paulina Tsurkowskij Genik. The family immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1896. While in Ukraine, Helen contracted measles, the effects of which left her mentally handicapped. When her parents were unable to care for her in their later years, her father took her to the Manitoba Developmental Centre
in Portage la Prairie, Portage la Prairie Census Division, Manitoba, Canada, where she lived and worked for about 30 years until her death in 1948.
