His career of reviewing plays and films spanned the years when Hollywood was in its infancy on through the Golden Age and beyond. He was a fixture at Hollywood film premieres and in 1957 was awarded a Golden Globe Award, the first person outside the film industry ever to be so honored. His mother was a well known Southland socialite, his wife Elza was a writer and radio broadcaster and a son, William, is a well known character actor.
