The 1st son of Samuel Sr., and Catherine Davis Watkins of Wales, and brother of:

Mary Ann b.1844
Nicholas b.1845
William H. b.1849

His father and brothers worked the coal mines of Luzerne Co., but Samuel takes work as (looks like) "Rentman", a "BoP" (no idea what that may stand for), a "laborer", and a "Stationary Engineer". Obviously he was a self made man and did many different kinds of work to support his family.
His Military records show he is missing his left leg. Wether or not that was from wounds sustained in the Civil War, an accident or work related, is unknown as yet.

He married Mary Susanna Fritz in 1864 and is the father of:

John Henry Sr. (Mary Ann Haggerty)
Susanna Marie (died age 10)
Nicholas Edward (Alice Gross-Tormey)
Winfield Scott (Martha G. Minnich)
Samuel Daniel (Emma Lewis)
Minnie M.
